Description: Engaging students is one of the most compelling concerns in higher education today, but creating a course that motivates and involves students while still respecting faculty time and effort is a tremendous challenge. This interactive session integrates theory, research, and practice to offer teachers a dynamic model for understanding student engagement as well as tips, strategies, and techniques for promoting it in the face-to-face and online classroom.
About the Speaker:
Elizabeth Barkley is an internationally known scholar, educator and consultant. With over 30 years experience as an innovative and reflective teacher, her areas of interest include engaging students through active and collaborative learning; transforming face-to-face and online curriculum to meet the needs of diverse learners (especially those from new and emerging generations); the scholarship of teaching and learning; and connecting learning goals with outcomes and assessment. She is author of Student Engagement Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty (Jossey-Bass, 2009), Collaborative Learning Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty (co-authored with K. Patricia Cross and Claire Howell Major, Jossey-Bass, 2005) and Crossroads: The Multicultural Roots of Popular Music in America (Prentice Hall, 2007).
