Carol Stapp, Ph.D.

Associate Professor
Director

Museum Education Program
George Washington University

After receiving a BA from Newcomb College, Tulane University, and an MA from the University of Pennsylvania in Art History, Carol Stapp earned a Ph.D. in American Studies from The George Washington University. She has served as Director of the Museum Education Program at GW since 1983, teaching core courses associated with museum history and functions, as well as organizing and overseeing the museum internship. Carol can draw upon extensive experience in confronting the challenge of writing well, from editorial page editor of her high school paper to editor-in-chief of the Journal of Museum Education.

Whatever competence Carol may possess most likely springs from rigorous instructors (elementary and high school teachers who stressed grammar and punctuation) and inspiring role models (her father and a faculty colleague who emphasized eloquence and clarity). Her articles and reviews have appeared in Curator, Museum News, Preservation Forum, Visual Arts Research, and the Journal of American History, among others. In 1993 she wrote Afro-Americans in Antebellum Boston: An Analysis of Probate Records (Garland Press) and in 2000 published The Change Agent: Selected Writings of Marcella Brenner. Additionally, in 1995, she was the principal author of AAM’s Writing for Professional Publications.
