Elizabeth Maurer is a museum professional with 15 years of experience in educational programming and exhibition development. Currently, she is an Associate with Design and Production, one of the largest fabricators of museum exhibits in the United
States. Maurer is responsible for new business development and serves as a project
director coordinating fabrication and installation on large projects with museum clients
and designers. Maurer continues her engagement with the museum education
community by developing and writing curriculum and interpretive plans and
presenting teacher workshops for museum clients.
Prior to joining D&P in early 2007, Maurer worked for six years as the Education Project Manager at George Washington's Mount Vernon, one of the most popular
historic houses in America welcoming one million visitors a year. At Mount Vernon,
Maurer managed the exhibition content and installation of the award-winning Donald
W. Reynold's Education Center and oversaw the development of the interpretive plan
for the new public tour. Maurer spent seven years with the Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation as an Education Specialist and Program Manager, working extensively with
teachers and students in active learning techniques. At Colonial Williamsburg, she
was a leader in incorporating storytelling into programming.
As the editor-in-chief of The Journal of Museum Education, Maurer is interested in
exploring the changing culture of the museum field and educators' roles as museums
grapple with changing audiences, integrating new technologies, and increased
difficulties with funding. Maurer belongs to the American Association of Museums
where she is a member of the professional committees for exhibition, media and
technology, and education. In addition, she belongs to the American Association for
State and Local History, the Virginia Association of Museums, and the Museum
Education Roundtable. Maurer holds a B.A. in history and English from Albion College
and an M.A. in museum education from The George Washington University.
