Today’s libraries focus increasingly on ways of making it possible for
our patrons to use library resources anytime, anywhere through the development
of a myriad of digital library projects. With this focus, it seems logical
that the same technologies would offer librarians ways of working anytime,
anywhere – that is, teleworking.
Telework is on the rise
in today’s
workplace - in 2001, 21% of working Americans teleworked full- or part-time
(International Telework Association
and Council). Teleworking can improve productivity and employee satisfaction;
save employers money; and is an effective form of working in today's electronically-enabled
libraries.
This discussion will focus on how and why telework can be good for libraries
and librarians. Participants will increase their understanding of the key issues
involved, including: the benefits of teleworking for employees, supervisors,
and employers; whether teleworking is right for you or your employees; tips
for becoming an effective teleworker; tips for supervising teleworkers successfully;
and strategies for becoming an advocate of telework in your workplace.
