Connecting
people to people is one of the biggest strengths of the
Internet. In this session Jonathan Finkelstein of LearningTimes
will facilitate a live discussion on what learning and
professional development look like when the emphasis
is on building and developing participatory, interactive,
online learning communities, rather than merely libraries
of online content.

Drawing
on examples of work done through LearningTimes with groups like Columbia
Teachers College, New Visions for Public Schools, the Library Online Conference,
World Education Market, the Academy of American Poets and The Campus Computing
Project, Jonathan will help us explore and demonstrate:
- Community models: time-based
coalescing of members, network of affiliates and best-of-breed infrastructures
- Online conferences and
webcast series as community-building anchors and sustaining/growing
revenue bases
- Fostering blends of
real-time and asynchronous experiences including virtual press conferences,
member blogging, discussion, voice
boards,
and webcasting
- Virtual group meeting
rooms for ad hoc collaboration, instant messaging, and other uses of online
voice-based communication
This session will be a
collaborative group exploration of the exciting social world of interactive
online learning
through
community-building.
