This session will explore how public libraries can meet the needs of their young patrons, and bring more kids into libraries by offering innovative technology programs and services. One such after-school program, Live Homework Help, was launched in September 2001, and served over 150,000 students last school year.

  • Why are such programs popular with young patrons?
  • What do students need from their public library?
  • How can public libraries deliver what students need while reinforcing their core mission?
  • How can offering such programs by using existing public library computers, infrastructure, and staff enhance the public library’s standing in their community?
  • How do such programs perform an important educational function that schools are not able to provide?
  • What separates a good idea from a well run, well promoted, and effective youth program?
  • How can public libraries find funding for innovative youth programming during difficult budget times?
  • What does the future hold for youth programming in public libraries?

This session will answer the questions above, and others, by reporting on the experiences of librarians and educators that have helped serve hundreds of thousands of students through public library programs in over 25 states.
