"Funding for Libraries: There Are Alternatives"

Program Overview:
For as long as most of us can remember, funding has been an issue for libraries. Library budgets are constantly under scrutiny by ‘funders’, whether those funders are academic institutions, the public or governments. This workshop contends that it’s time for us to look at alternative funding models and determine if there are other ways of resolving these age-old issues. The workshop will explore funding models, from earned income to sponsorship, used by other non-profit organizations such as NPR and museums. Workshop leaders will then lead discussions on how libraries might adopt similar models without undermining current funding avenues of taxes, grants and academic fees.

Full Workshop Description:

For as long as most of us can remember, funding has been an issue for libraries. Library budgets are constantly under scrutiny by ‘funders’, whether those funders are academic institutions, the public or governments. This workshop contends that it’s time for us to look at alternative funding models and determine if there are other ways of resolving these age-old issues. The workshop will explore funding models, from earned income to sponsorship, used by other non-profit organizations such as NPR and museums. Workshop leaders will then lead discussions on how libraries might adopt similar models without undermining current funding avenues of taxes, grants and academic fees.

Workshop Objectives:
The objectives of the workshop are to give librarians and information professionals a forum for learning about other funding models, how they work, what they entail, the advantages and disadvantages, and to provide an opportunity for considering how these funding models might work in their specific environments. The workshop will feature interviews with people who have been involved in various funding models in libraries, museums, and public radio/TV.
