Schedule

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2010

Be a part of the 2010 Smith Leadership Symposium, a bold and innovative learning opportunity that leverages technology and the collaboration of several California organizations to explore multiple dimensions of audience experience. Although museums will be a large focus of the program, the Symposium also addresses implications for a broader arts, science, and cultural community.

The Symposium is based in San Diego, with satellite convening sites in Los Angeles and San José. The Symposium offers a blended-learning experience using both live streaming interactive technology (morning sessions) and in-person breakout sessions (afternoon sessions). An online version of the program is available to those not able to attend a convening site.

Convening sites:

8:00-8:45am (PDT) Breakfast and Networking

CONVENING SITES — 8:00-8:45am: Mix and mingle over a light breakfast with fellow Symposium attendees and programmatic and sponsoring partners.

ONLINE AUDIENCE – 8:30-8:45am: Precede the day with a special online orientation session led by Jonathan Finkelstein, Executive Producer of Learning Times, the program’s technology partner.

8:45-9:15am (PDT) Introduction and setting the stage

(Live, interactive webcast from Balboa Park, San Diego begins for all on-site, convening site and online attendees)

The 2010 Symposium Leadership Symposium and its live, interactive webcast officially kicks off from the San Diego Natural History Museum with introductions and an event overview provided by:

Celeste DeWald, Executive Director of the California Association of Museums
City of San Diego Councilmember Todd Gloria
Dr. Mick Hager, President and CEO of the San Diego Natural History Museum
Paige Simpson, Director of the Balboa Park Learning Institute

9:15am-10:30am (PDT) Part I: New Thinking about Audience Experience

Thought leaders Dr. John Falk, Nina Simon, and Salvador Acevedo, together for the first time, frame the day’s exploration of audience motivation, engagement, and relationship-building. Learn as they share their work, participate in a dynamic panel dialogue, and field questions from the convening sites and online attendees.

10:30am-11:30am (PDT) Part II: Debut of Balboa Park Audience Benefit Study

Extend your thinking about audience experience AND be the first to learn about 12 museums in San Diego’s Balboa Park that collaboratively studied how people benefit from museum experiences. Dr. Marianna Adams and staff from participating museums share initial findings from the study, which began in March 2010 as a unique professional development opportunity and yielded more than 10,000 visitor surveys.

11:30am-Noon (PDT) Part I & II Synthesis

Reflect upon the morning’s ideas to highlight central themes and their applicability across all types of arts, science, and cultural institutions.

Experience how discussion can be captured visually by an online graphic artist who will create several "learning artworks" for the day, which you can use to share your Symposium experience with others after the event.

(San Diego only: This is the program conclusion for half-day attendees.)

Noon-12:45pm (PDT) Lunch and Program Break

Enjoy a break prior to the start of the afternoon breakout sessions. Lunch is provided for those attending convening sites.

12:45pm-3:30pm (PDT) Part III: Breakout sessions
(A mix of in-person and live, interactive webcast sessions)

Deepen your learning by participating in two, 75-minute breakout sessions that apply the ideas presented in the morning session in smaller group contexts. Session topics range from how to create participatory experiences to understanding how audience experience can help your institution connect with diverse audiences.

Breakout sessions are unique for each convening site (many of which take place in the galleries) as well as for the online audience. Click below to explore the breakout session choices in each location. Due to limited space in the convening site breakout sessions, site attendees will be asked to indicate session preferences during registration.

3:45pm-4:30pm (PDT) Part IV: Synthesis of Day
(Live, interactive webcast from the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego)

As a culminating event, reconnect virtually with the presenters, convening sites and online attendees to report back on the breakout sessions and to connect the work to central themes from the morning. Watch as the final "learning artworks" from the day are created.
