Well, I made it! I was tickled to encounter several other librarians on the plane from Chicago this morning and even got to witness a bit of an impromptu demo of the Amazon Kindle as I waited to board the plane. Needless to say, I’m already stoked and ready to begin learning and networking!
It’s a little cooler here in Seattle than expected (our taxi driver said it was around 40°), but the sun is shining and it’s a beautiful day. I can’t wait to get out and start exploring! I thought I’d share a picture from my hotel window of the Space Needle. I think I’ll be heading over there this afternoon. Can’t wait!

Welcome to the ‘Emerald City’, Stacey (not sure if the Convention 7 Visitors Bureau still calls it that — maybe other Seattle old-timers can confirm?). After a mysterious 36-hour period during which I saw sunshine, hail, snow, rain, and skies as dark as evening all during one afternoon, it’s great to see that ACRL conference goers are being welcomed with sunshine. Enjoy your exploration of the city and make a stop at the Rem Koolhaas-designed Central Branch of the Seattle Public Library if you have time.
Thanks for the warm welcome, Zola! The sunshine has been wonderful and the view from the Space Needle was amazing. I’ll definitely try to make a stop at SPL Central Branch - sounds very intriguing! Btw, why was Seattle called the Emerald City? Maybe I’ll find out on the Seattle Highlights Tour tomorrow morning.
I read on the traveldk site (http://traveldk.com/seattle/practical-info) that you shouldn’t call it the “Emerald City,” since Seattle-ites don’t call it that. I guess it’s like “Bean Town” for Boston. Anyway, I doubt that people would be offended. It’s really a neat name, and I’m always a bit hopeful that I’ll meet the Wizard there.
