Welcome to ACRL in Seattle!
Although I’m not a new librarian, this will be my first ACRL conference. I’ve just moved back to the US after living in Britain for 15 years, so it will be interesting to see how library conferences differ between Britain and the US (I’m guessing the US conferences are on a much bigger scale and have better coffee - this is Seattle, after all).
I’ll be blogging from the perspective of a first-time attendee and a community college librarian, but will also try to offer some tips on things to do in Seattle.
Here are a few of my favorites:
Looking for great cocktails and good happy hour food? Try the Alibi Room in Pike Place Market.
Taking a break from the conference: spend a few quiet minutes in Seattle Art Museum. There’s a wonderful exhibit on American Art going at the moment.
I know librarians are about more than just books… but Elliott Bay Book Company is worth a visit. Give yourself enough time to browse!
Doughnuts are my weakness… try Top Pot (Downtown, 5th & Lenora). Soon I’ll begin my hard training for their Annual Doughnut Eating Contest.
Want some tropical weather in Seattle? The Tropical Butterfly House in the Pacific Science Center is a delight (and kept at a steady 80 degrees).
Not your average pizza: try Serious Pie (downtown, 3rd & Virginia). The pizza with cherry bomb peppers and sweet fennel sausage is wonderful!
See you in Seattle!

I just came to the conference late, wanting to catch up on what happened in Seattle while we were dealing with floods and blizzards in North Dakota. I really could have used that Seattle weather. I attended the Virtual Conference in 2007, but that time I did it mostly online and all the social networking stuff was totally new. Now that I am doing this totally asynch, it is a different thing entirely. Better than sitting reading journal on a Friday afternoon and trying to keep awake!
