Looking Forward to Indy
Hello, I am Ken Turino, Manager of Commuity Engagement and Exhibitions at Historic New England. We are the largest regional heritage organization in America with 36 historic properites in 5 of the 6 New England States. We are not in Vermont yet but we will get there. I am located at our headquarters in Boston. I was fortunate to be on the AASLH Planning Comittee for this meeting so I know you are in store for some particularly relevant programs wether you are from a historic house or a large state museum. If you are interested in small museums or military history or on developing new revenue sources, there is something here for you. Having a particular interest in historic houses, I am looking forward to learning more about AASLH’s Standards Project for history museums, historic houses and other historical organizations. We will have much to report on. Indy is a great city so I am also looking forward to exploring. See you there.
Ken

Greetings and salutations. The AASLH conference is days away at this point, and this year I have to say I am really looking forward to Indy. This summer leading up to it has brought back many memories. The last time AASLH was there was my first conference as an AASLH staff member. It was September 2001, and the events that unfolded on the 11th meant cancelling that year’s conference. Looking back, I’m proud of how AASLH leadership and staff, and the many friends in Indy, handled the situation, got the word out, and did what we could to aid those who came early and were stranded. Coming back as a member and registrant, I’m excited to see what the host city has to offer and the forward-thinking ideas that will be presented over those conference days. Just as important, I’m looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and making new ones–sharing ideas, reaffirming beliefs, and solving all the fields’ problems over a late night beer.
It is too easy to take for granted going to sessions, meeting exhibitors, and enjoying evening events and tours. But it is at these places and at these times that an idea can spark change, a friendship made can alter a career, or an often overworked and over-stressed staff can recharge themselves to once more enter the breach.
This is what I look forward to in Indy; I hope you seek and find the same.

I am looking forward to the AASLH conference. It is always a great time to reconnect with friends. On Saturday morning, we have a session on two federal grant programs: Preserve America and Save America’s Treasures. They are potential sources of specialized funding.
When I was in Indianapolis for the program committee, I was feeling under the weather, so I am really looking forward to a good time this time. Jay D. Vogt, South Dakota
